Traditional Hatha Yoga
Hatha means in fact "extreme force", but it also means "sun" (ha) and "moon" (tha), as a reference to the transcendence of identification with duality or opposites, which is the cause for human suffering.
Hatha Yoga was developed in post-classic India around the 9th and 10th centuries of this era. It´s origins are connected with the lineage of the 64 siddhas (perfect beings), starting in the masters Matsyendranatha and Gorakshanatha.
This yoguic system arose from the previous sytems of Yoga such as Bhakti, Laya, Karma, Mantra, or Raja Yoga, but brought an enormous contribution to the tradition of Yoga, revealling the importance to phisiological purification and body allignment during the practice, and to the connection in between mind and breath. This method aims to conquer a state of physical condition named the "adamantine body" (vajradeha), and to combine that physical perfection with a similar perfection of the subtle, mental, emotional, and psychic dimensions, to the accomplishment of the supreme goal of all forms of Yoga: liberation from metaphysical ignorance, from limitation, and from the continous cycle of death and rebirth. This freedom is called moksha in sanscrit.
The philosophical support for this system is clearly based in the teachings of Advaita Vedanta, meaning "non-dual" (advaita) and "knowlegde of the Self" (vedanta), or literally, "the end of Veda", the biggest and most influent school of non-dualistic philosophy in India, and the most connected to the tradition of the Upanishads.
